So.. I understand that I am about a month late, please forgive me!

Day 1:
Top 32 Qualifiers (Singles)
I almost made it out of my pool =( I was sent to losers and taken out by Andreas, the Rufus player from Europe. They were quite interesting matches and were really exciting for me. Overall, I got 33rd at the tournament. After the qualifiers were over, I was able to get a lot of casuals in. I got a rare chance to play with a lot of international players such as MOV, Cuongster, Kindevu, and RF. I must say, I got my ass handed to me! However, playing everyone and having them expose the flaws in my gameplay was a good eye opener. It helped me realize what I need to work on. Some of my casual matches between me and MOV were uploaded here:

My matches with MOV start at 0:17:00. Also in this video at the beginning is a money match between Luffy (European Rose) and Wolfkrone (American Viper) if anyone is interested! Other games on the casual setup including money matches with RF, Kindevu, Ryan Hart, Luffy, Wolfkrone, and others that were recorded can be found here:

Day 2:
Top 32 AE
Canada Cup’s top 32 was definitely stacked. With 8 different teams and 5 players on each, that’s 40 top players from around the world. Each match was very entertaining and displayed a high level of skill from each player. Kazunoko won the whole tournament using Yun but I’d say the MVP of the tournament was Leslie, the Sagat player from Singapore, who got second. Not many people knew about him because Singapore hasn’t been big on the map in America compared to other countries. Leslie awed the crowd with his outstanding gameplay. Here’s some footage of Leslie’s Sagat (Semi-final match at Canada Cup 2011 against Mago):

I had really hoped Team USA would win but props to Team Japan 2 taking first. Honestly, I didn’t really think Team 2 would beat Team USA. My guess was if Team USA didn’t take first, Team Japan 1 would take it. Here is the footage of the grand finals between Team USA and Team Japan 2:

Kazunoko became the biggest threat when he ended up OCVing Team USA the first time they faced off. When Floe ended up taking out Kazunoko in grand finals, I felt like Team USA had a very good chance of resetting the bracket. However, Kindevu anchored for Team Japan 2 and ended up taking out America’s anchor, Wolfkrone. I am very happy that I got to witness this historical moment go down in person. There is no substitution for this live experience and I encourage everyone to try and make it out next time!

Aftermath:
Many thanks to Lap Chi for keeping a local bar open for us. I had an AMAZING time! There were a couple setups for money matches and what not, but there was also great music, pool, and drinks. I’ll let the pictures do the talking =P :

After the afterparty, the hotel was kind enough to open up a room for us to host money matches. I don’t have any footage of the epicness that occurred, but it was a crazy experience (not to mention my 100:1 odds side bet on Neurosis vs. Zzangmoo with Lap Chi! Almost lost me $200!) I won a money match as well . It was so fun and I got to know a lot of the other players. Luffy, Cuongster, Skatan, Infiltration, Laugh, Zzangmoo, Neurosis, Zhi, Xian, among others showed me how amazing this community can really be. Much love to them <3.

I ended up having so much fun that I stayed in the money match room until 8am and then I had to leave to the airport. =( I was really sad leaving but it just makes me appreciate tournament experiences like this so much more!

I’ll definitely be cheering for Team USA to win this but it definitely will be a tough fight. There are a lot of big names and sponsored players coming out from around the world. However, the thing that is really intimidating is the people who aren’t as famous. They’re clearly one of the best players from the country they’re representing or they wouldn’t be on the team. They have that unknown factor to them that other players might not know what to expect.

What I mean is, US players have faced players such as Tokido, Mago, Laugh, Infiltration, and Air several times. They know how each player plays and are comfortable with it. Other international players that don’t usually come to US tournaments have the element of surprise on their side and could potentially catch someone off guard. It might take a round of experimenting and losing to figure each player out.

The matches that I’m excited for?

Justin vs. Kazunoko – Kazunoko, current winner of SBO, just came out with his Yun matchup list that can be found on Air’s Blog. It states that all matches besides the Yun-Yun mirror match are in Yun’s favor, including Yun-Rufus being 7-3 for Yun. However, Justin feels very confident against the twins so I would definitely love to see how this match goes.

Xian vs. All – I’m saying “all” because aside from the very few Gen players in the US, there has been no Gen in the hands of a top player. Xian, known for his top tier Yun, decided it was time to turn a new leaf before SSF4: AE 2012 comes out. In the Canada Cup International trailer, he talks about how this exhibition will be the time to reveal his Gen after working long months in the lab with Gen. I really hope he does well and show other Gen players some new goodies ^_^

Wolfkrone vs. Laugh – At Season’s Beatings, Wolfkrone and Laugh had to face each other. It went down to the last round with both players down to less than a quarter of their life. You can watch the match here. Both players played extremely solid but I felt like Wolfkrone got a little too scared of Laugh and his two meters. He lost a lot of his life to throws. Hopefully Wolfkrone devised a plan against this because I’m sure this situation will happen again.

Floe vs. Mago – During the money matches that happened at Season’s Beatings, Floe and Mago played a ft5 for $20. It went down to the last match, last round. Floe did drop some of his combos that were vital which eventually led to his loss, but this is an issue that can be dealt with. Floe has been training to make sure this will not happen again at Canada Cup, and I’m pretty confident that he’s got it down along with some new tricks up his sleeve!

Justin vs. Leslie – A couple days ago, a fellow Singaporean called out Justin on facebook stating something along the lines of “No offense, Justin is a great player, but I feel like Leslie would win that match”. Leslie is practically the best Sagat out of Singapore and could very likely be one of the best Sagats in the world. Now this match might be in Sagat’s favor, but you’re talking about Justin who claims he doesn’t lose to anyone’s Sagat. Since then, there has been a little friendly rivalry between Justin and Leslie so I’m sure it will be a good show.

Of course there are more matches I’d like to talk about but let’s stop here before I start ranting :p

This is a Fusion fighting stick with custom buttons and ball top. The stick and custom modifications are all available on eightarc.

I got this stick about a week ago and tested it out at Wednesday Night Fights last night for the first time. Besides it’s amazing look, its functionality is just as great! It also has a felt covered bottom to prevent slippage and movement of the stick. It is also pretty easy to switch between XBOX360 or PS3. All you have to do is move a switch left or right. I let several of my friends borrow it to test it out and they all gave me great feedback about it. If you’re wondering how big this stick is, it is 15.8″x10″x2.5″. In other words, it WILL fit in most of the widely used fighting stick carriers. Also, there is a compartment for the cable conveniently located on the side!

The Fusion model comes dual modded for PS3/XBOX360/PC at $184.99 in only Ebony (Black). The other model is called ISO that comes in Ebony (Black) ($139.99), Onyx ($154.99), and Pearl (White) ($154.99) for PS3 and Onyx ($169.99) for XBOX360. They all come with Sanwa sticks/buttons/balltops and are interchangeable with other Sanwa sticks/buttons/balltops. There are also clear panels available on the site just in case you wanted a different look!

I know I’m a little late with this post, but I was just waiting for the lovely Karaface (@karaleung) to finish uploading her pictures ^_^

About my first experience? Seasons Beatings was AMAZING! The venue, people, and atmosphere were simply incredible. This is the last year that it will be hosted at MoMo’s apparently and I’m glad that I didn’t miss it. MoMo’s served great boba drinks along with their bulgogi bowl and chicken wings. Not to mention, Raising Cane’s is right across from the venue!

But anyways, I really enjoyed this event especially during their exhibitions. They had three main exhibitions: Good vs. Evil (MVC3 Non-Phoenix vs. Phoenix teams), East vs. West Coast (MVC3) and US vs. The World (SSF4:AE). The most exciting event in my opinion was the Good vs. Evil MVC3 event. On the Good team, there was PR Rog, Justin Wong, Marlin Pie, Combofiend, and Noel Brown. On the Evil side, there was Flocker, Viscant, Tokido, Filipino Champ, and Detrimantix. It went down to the LAST match to determine the winner! In the end, the good team came out 13-12 against evil. It was an amazing exhibition! (Made a couple bucks too!) As for the other exhibitions, West Coast took the title once again against the East Coast in MVC3. Unlike last year, US lost against The World. Poongko went 5-0 against team US which put a huge lead against the US. It’s ok, we’ll fight back for it at Canada Cup!

The top 13 results for AE was:
1. EG|Momochi (Cody)
2. EG|Ricky Ortiz (Rufus)
3. Uryo (Sakura)
4. MCZ|Tokido (Akuma)
5. TH|Poongko (Seth)
5. DMG|PR Balrog (Balrog)
7. EG|Justin Wong (Rufus)
7. MCZ|Mago (Fei Long)
9. cc.coL|Mike Ross (E. Honda)
9. Flash Metroid (Zangief, Makoto)
9. Diemnion (Guile)
9. Laugh (Ryu, Rose, Fei Long)
13. EG|fLoE (Yang, Sagat)
13. Infiltration (Akuma)
13. Alucard (Balrog)
13. MRN|WolfKrone (C. Viper)

and for MVC3:
1. Flocker (Zero, Tron, Phoenix)
2. BA|Viscant (Wesker, Tron, Phoenix)
3. DMG|PR Balrog (Dante, Wolverine, Tron)
4. cc.coL|Filipino Champ (Magneto, Dormammu, Phoenix)
5. BT|IFC Yipes (Wesker, Dante, Akuma)
5. EG|Justin Wong (Storm, Wesker, Akuma)
7. FC|Twisted Jago (Wesker, Dante, Trish)
7. DJ Huoshen (Felicia, Super-Skrull, Taskmaster)
9. LB|ChrisGNY (Amaterasu, Ryu, Wekser)
9. FecalPenance (Deadpool, Dante, Akuma)
9. cc.coL|Combofiend (She-Hulk, Taskmaster, Spencer)
9. DragonGod (Wesker, Haggar, Phoenix)
13. EG|fLoE (She-Hulk, Wolverine, Akuma)
13. Ranma Sama
13. RayRay (Ryu, Magneto, Sentinel)
13. FR|TooMuchDamage (Magneto, Wesker, Akuma)

(provided by Shoryuken)

As for myself, I went 3-2 losing to Dieminion in winner and a Bison player (sorry I didn’t get your name ) in losers. I really have to learn that match heh. Besides the main tournament though, I got a lot of casuals and money matches in with the East Coast players. Their playstyle is definitely a lot different from the West Coast. I’d say they play more defensive and safer than how West Coast players play.

Here’s some of my favorite pictures from the event taken by Karaface ^_^

You can check out all her other pictures here: Karaface’s SmugMug

Of course, we all went to eat out after the finals! Went to Hounddog’s and had amazing pizza! We even got Tokido to do a little dance :p I forgot to get a picture of all of us together though I’ll remember to do it next tournament!

Seasons Beatings is a tournament I would definitely participate in again next year. It was just too good to just watch on the stream at home. You HAD to take in the atmosphere! Plus, after the tournament, you could just walk around the hotel and find doors open with setups. Pretty convenient I must say ^_^.

But for now, on to the next! CANADA CUP!

P.S. Just gonna answer a question I got in my email real quick:

Hey Sherry, heard about your site from Justin Wong at Wednesday Night Fights haha, I was just wondering how do you incorporate Street Fighter training with your busy lifestyle? I’m from Canada so I don’t have many arcades around me to practice in, and the only arcade I’ve been to has a really bad set up. I currently use Ryu and Balrog and thinking of picking up Yun(most of my friends are calling me a sell out too haha) but generally do you have any advice or tactics or some regime you have to progressively get better at the game?
-Andrew Yong

Because I’m busy a lot of times, I rarely have time to practice. But when I do practice, I play for very long sessions without any breaks. I just have more fun that way. It’s also an easy way to realize what kind of patterns/habits you have when you run long sessions. In my opinion, to get better, you have to lose in order to know what you’re doing wrong. Once you realize what your flaws are, work on them! And once you play a variety of different players, you’ll be able to switch up your playstyle accordingly.

By the way, who cares if you play an OP character. As long as you’re having fun then that’s all that matters. If you weren’t winning at all then they wouldn’t be saying anything in the first place! Just do your thing ^_^

I asked Wolfkrone to do a short biography of himself and explain why he chose Viper. Here was his full response. Enjoy!:

Name: Joshua (WOLKFKRONE) Philpot

Main: C. Viper

I chose C. Viper because I saw the sf4 trailer with her fighting bison and from there on, I was attached to her. Her flamekicks and thunderknuckles were everywhere and it was amazing to see at the time. She has style to her which most streetfighter chracters didn’t have at the time. She seemed like an overall exciting character even before the game was released. That played a huge part in me choosing her.

I main C. Viper because she is my favorite character by far. She can rushdown and apply a lot of pressure without having to sacrifice a lot such as meter in the process. Viper is one of the few characters who is flashy and has good damage to back it up. For example, characters like Sakura and Dudley are flashy, but their damage is nowhere in comparison to Viper’s. Most people call my style lame or at least they used to because I would let the timer run down versus certain characters or run away towards the end of the match. With C. Viper, I don’t use as many mixups as some other vipers do because I make the mistake of believing that the opponent knows what I know (giving them too much credit). I know how to stop just about all of C. Viper’s setups and in a match, I sometimes hesitate from doing it because I believe the opponent knows how to stop it. That is one of the reasons why I play so basic with her. I also wanted to develop a solid playstyle with C. Viper as well. Although C. Viper is known for her rushdown, sometimes I don’t feel it is a tight-knit rushdown and there are ways to counter it. So in return, I play as safe as possible with her taking minimal risks until I get a knockdown where the factor of them stopping my rushdown is slimmer. My goal in the Street Fighter scene is to become dominant and win every tournament. One of my first goals was to become one of the best and now that I have accomplished that, I want to progress even more. I want to become so good at the game that only a select few would give me a problem at the game. I want to become the best!
